Choosing a Boat Consider your preference for building a kit or purchasing a fiberglass shell, rowing a single or sharing with a double, and your friendliness requirement! Shells featured in this catalog have ample capacity, are fun in less than perfect conditions, are a delight to row, and are boats that you can be proud to own and show your friends. Contemporary or traditional, all have efficient hulls, designed specifically for the unique requirements of sliding-seat rowing, and incorporate the highest quality rigging. The wider boats, Sea Ranger and Merry Wherry, have such stability that you may release the oars at any time - perfect for relaxed gunk holing. Narrower shells, like Echo , are faster, require a bit more attention but, even so, are far more stable then skinny racing shells. The better choice for fitness oriented rowing. You will be using your new shell much more frequently than other water-craft - choose wisely, which usually means spending more money than planned - and you will be rewarded with a wonderful fitness-oriented life style, rather than just another idea that didn’t pan out! Quality rigging and oars and a lightweight, yet durable hull are essential, important both for getting to the water and for enjoying that perfect stroke.
Fitness Rowing For those under 220 lbs, the Echo has a 21" waterline width provide the best aerobic conditioning and can deal with lots of chop. The Verry Merry has a bit less capacity and best for more protected water. Recreational Rowing Both Merry Wherry's and Sea Ranger's have wide waterline widths allowing one to let go of the oars, change clothing, have a drink or snap a pick. They are great for sharing with a passenger or rowing double. The Merry Wherry-15' and Sea Ranger-16' are the more personal sized boat and easier to handle for one. The Merry Wherry Two-19' and Sea Ranger II-19' are best if two are to row.
Adventure Rowing The Echo Islander has underdeck storage for weekend tripping (like a kayak) - just pack light! The Merry Wherry Two-19' and Sea Ranger II-19' are awesome choices with excellent sea keeping and lots of capacity. Rig with D-ring tie-downs and waterproof gear bags from www.nrsweb.com . Extended trips for one and weekend trips for two.
Big Guy Rowing The rowing industry has just not provided much choice for todays "big guy". Please don't try to talk yourself into a open water racing shell like the Echo Ace , an Echo or Verry Merry. They are not designed for big guys. Your higher center of gravity (a rower sits 6" higher then a kayak) will make them very tippy and your weight will be too far forward, resulting in poor handling. Why buy an expensive boat, not enjoy it, sell it after not using it and pass on the wonderful fitness fun of rowing?
Sea Ranger II is the ticket. We have many customers, even 250 lbs and up who have always enjoyed this design for over twenty-five years. We have retooled this hull using resin infusion moulding. We took the "hog" out present in the old molds, improved the skeg for tracking, increased the freeboard for better sea keeping and increased capacity. Three new molds were made. Its awesome. Take a close look at it. | |
